MCMC Urges Public To Not Share Video Clips Of Today’s Helicopter Incident

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a stern warning to the public against sharing any video footage related to the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) helicopter crash which occurred earlier today. The tragedy in question claimed a total of 10 lives, with seven crew members of the Maritime Operations Helicopter (HOM-AW139) and three crew members of the TLDM Fennec.

Citing concerns about potential legal violations under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA 1998), MCMC urged individuals not to disseminate such content on social media platforms. Additionally, they advised those who had already uploaded the clips to promptly remove them, emphasising the need for sensitivity and respect towards the grieving families of the victims.

For the uninitiated, two TLDM helicopters collided during a fly-past training session this morning. The incident occurred as part of preparations for the Navy’s upcoming 90th anniversary celebrations. TLDM’s confirmation of the loss underscored the gravity of the situation, prompting official responses aimed at preserving the dignity and privacy of the affected families.

As the regulatory authority responsible for overseeing network facilities and services, MCMC emphasised the prohibition of transmitting communications that could potentially harm, offend, or disturb others under the CMA 1998. Expressing solidarity with the victims’ families and next of kin, it reiterated the importance of upholding ethical standards in online behaviour, particularly during times of tragedy and mourning.
