Filson has been cranking out outerwear made with Mackinaw wool since the 1897 Alaska Gold Rush. It’s remained popular over the decades because it’s dense, naturally water-resistant, highly breathable, and exceptionally durable. It also doesn’t come cheap, so when we spot a half-off deal on a Mackinaw jacket (that’s also made with the brand’s similarly iconic Tin Cloth) we shout it from the rooftops.
The Filson Mackinaw Wool Double Coat is on sale for $348, half of its normal $695 price. Is it still expensive? Yes. Is it an absolute bargain for a coat this good that will last essentially forever? You bet. Customers say it’s “incredibly warm and very well-made” and “very cool” in terms of style. They also say that it runs large, so unless you want a loose fit or to wear it over bulky layers it’s worth considering sizing down.

A Mackinaw coat is all about the wool, and this one is made with 24-ounce, 100% wool coupled with Filson’s uber durable, 14-ounce 100% cotton oil finish Tin Cloth waxed canvas. It has a slew of pockets—four on the front, two hidden hand warmers, and one in the rear—along with a removable hood. The front closes with buttons and the pockets and cuffs with snaps. The TLDR here is that this is a very warm coat with lots of storage.
“Very different. Very unique. Very cool,” begins one glowing review that, unlike most, focuses on the fashion of this coat. “I took a chance on this jacket, and I am glad I did…The tin cloth and wool look great together and the pictures online don’t do it any justice.” It’s a great-looking coat, in other words, which helps to explain why people whose only outdoor time is walking through parking lots still wear them.

Another shopper said this coat “is probably the finest garment I have ever bought from anyone. And I have some good ones.” What makes it so great? It “does not balloon out or fit like a big potato. The hood lays down flat on shoulders when not used.” And speaking of shoulders, this reviewer says “black cloth over the shoulders is very cool and looks awesome…It feels like I could be out all day in any cold weather and be very comfortable.”
There might not be too many days left to wear this coat before summer, but you should be able to wear the Filson Mackinaw Wool Double Coat every winter for the rest of your life. Filson stuff doesn’t go on sale all that often, and a savings of nearly $350 means this deal is not to be missed.
